What is In-vessel Composting?

In‑vessel composting is a method of composting in which organic waste is placed in a closed container, drum, silo or reactor where temperature, moisture and aeration are carefully managed to accelerate decomposition.

Want to Know More

This technique is widely used in industrial or urban settings to process food residuals, biosolids or yard trimmings in a compact, controlled environment. Because it takes place inside an enclosed vessel, it offers stronger control over odors, pests and weather effects than open‑air methods. It differs from windrow composting (long uncovered rows) and aerated static pile composting (covered piles with forced aeration). Related terms include organic waste recycling, composting reactor and closed‑vessel composting.
