What is Dual-Stream Recycling?

Dual-Stream Recycling is a collection system in which recyclables are separated into two distinct streams before collection. Typically, one bin or cart is used for paper and cardboard, and another for containers such as plastics, metals, and glass. These streams are collected separately and transported to a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), where the materials are further processed and prepared for reuse.

Want to Know More

Dual-Stream Recycling collects paper products and containers in separate bins, helping reduce contamination compared with single-stream systems. By keeping materials separate, the quality of recovered recyclables improves, making them more valuable in recycling markets. While slightly less convenient for users than single-stream systems, dual-stream collection can lower processing costs and minimize waste that ends up in landfills. Multi-stream variations with more than two bins exist in some regions to further separate glass, plastics, and other materials for cleaner recovery.
