What are Scope 2 Emissions?

Scope 2 emissions are indirect greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the generation of purchased electricity, heat, or steam that an organization consumes. While the organization does not directly produce these emissions, they are a result of its energy use and are a key component of its overall carbon footprint.

Scope 2 emissions are part of the three-scope framework defined by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, alongside Scope 1 (direct emissions from owned or controlled sources) and Scope 3 (other indirect emissions). They help organizations understand the impact of energy consumption and identify opportunities to reduce emissions through renewable energy sourcing, energy efficiency improvements, or supplier engagement.
