What is the National Green Building Standard?

The National Green Building Standard® (NGBS) is an ANSI approved standard for residential construction, remodeling, and land development. It sets performance criteria across six areas including lot design and development, resource efficiency, water efficiency, energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality, and building operation and maintenance, allowing projects to earn certification at Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Emerald levels.

Want to Know More

The NGBS is actively used as a certification pathway for single family homes, multifamily buildings, and mixed use developments with a residential component. It offers flexibility in design and construction practices, allowing builders to tailor solutions based on budget, location, and project type. Updates continue with the 2020 edition currently in use. It also serves as a compliance option in building codes via International Green Construction Code.
