What is a Composition Audit?

June 13, 2016

A Composition Audit is designed to help you collect information on the contents of each of your collection Streams. The audit consists of emptying bags of Refuse from each Stream, one at a time, to see exactly what types of materials can be found inside. We recommend conducting your audit by looking at the Refuse collected at the endpoint of each divison you’ve set up for your organization.

By conducting a Composition Audit, you can expect to find out where your greatest contamination takes place, as well as which items your users find most difficult to Recycle. You may find that you have a bunch of yogurt containers in the Waste Stream, but really they might belong in the Plastics Stream, or you might discover coffee cups are in the Waste, Cans & Bottles and Paper Streams, so you’ll need to add a Coffee Cups Stream.
