In an effort to reduce garbage, the city of Burlington introduced centralized waste stations in the majority of their public facilities, including their Emergency Service Facilities. Individual garbage cans have also been removed from work stations to help encourage waste reduction. When the centralized waste stations were introduced at City Hall, daily garbage output was reduced by 50 per cent.
The Burlington Fire Department also created an additional program that accepts and recycles unwanted electronic items, keeping harmful materials out of landfills and introducing another revenue stream for the department.
The proceeds generated by recovering reusable electronic materials are used to support the Burlington Fire Department’s Vehicle Rescue Team. Residents of the city can safely and responsibly recycle electronics with the proceeds helping their vehicle rescue team train and compete in local and international competitions.
