Centralized waste stations at large public events have proven to be a winning formula for diversion success for both the companies and venues involved.

Canadian company DIG (Do It Green) is based in Calgary and assists festivals, concerts and other large public events with a solutions-based approach to managing waste. By engaging people to be more environmentally aware while at large scale events, DIG has taken part in diverting waste from the Calgary Stampede, the Scotiabank Calgary Marathon and partnering with YYC Food Trucks to assist with their sustainability efforts at any event they attend.

Other services offered by DIG include environmental auditing, energy use consulting, sustainable transportation options, vendor liaison, environmental education, benchmarking and reporting.

Do It Green recognizes that diverting waste is only one aspect of a sustainable event. Last year DIG acquired an H2O Buggy, a mobile water provider that eliminates the use of plastic bottles at large events. Thanks to their newly acquired water buggy the company was able to keep the equivalent of 390,000 bottles from entering the waste stream!

DIG’s current diversion rate is at about 76% but they have set a goal to reach a 90% diversion rate by 2020.  Judging by their passion for sustainability and the size of events they service, there’s no stopping DIG from reaching that goal.
