ASKING THE TOUGH QUESTIONS

Why would you run a centralized recycling program if your containers cannot give you a clean sort? In any recycling initiative, you have to ask yourself the tough questions to find the right answers. Centralized programs are growing in popularity and popping up across cities and offices nationwide. As a Recycling Coordinator, it is important to find the right containers that will ensure you meet your objectives. Your number one priority in finding effective centralized recycling containers should be the quality of the openings. To overcome potential obstacles including poor sorts and contamination, your openings should be easily identifiable and accessible. Container openings designed in recognizable shapes with clear labels will better communicate what you want collected and improve participation rates.

Our Super Sorter Series includes innovative centralized containers with the openings needed to effectively collect and sort recyclables. All Super Sorter products, including the All-In-One, Portables, Urban Recycler and Carts, come equipped with Super Sorter Openings. Each container can be customized with openings required in whatever sequence you are looking for. Unique openings are available as “Cans and Bottles”, “Paper” and “Waste” in various colors. Baffles can also be added on for outdoor applications, helping reduce contamination and act as a wasp flap.

Next, you must decide on what you want recycled, how it will be collected and what will make your centralized recycling program the most effective. Don't waste your time on containers that can't provide a critical feature that will have great impact on your recycling rates.  We would like to learn more about your centralized program and how we can help you find the best container solution fit for your needs.

WELCOMING A NEW MEMBER TO THE SUPER SORTER FAMILY

The Super Sorter Series line has a new member – The Super Sorter Portables. This cart and container system combines our Recycling & Waste Sorting Carts with newly designed lids for the 26 Gallon Upright containers. These lids can be customized with the Super Sorter Openings, ensuring an organized collection of recyclables and the clean sort you need.

The Super Sorter Portables are perfect for events and centralized recycling in high traffic office areas. The dual handle frame maneuvers easily through narrow hallways and tight corners, while the clearly marked containers minimize the possibility of cross contamination. With two models available, the cart can hold two or three 26 US Gallon Upright containers. The Super Sorter Upright containers are also available in a stand-alone configuration.

NRC 2005 CONFERENCE RECAP

A huge thank you to all of you who visited us at the NRC Conference from August 29th to 30th. It was great to see all our old friends from across the industry and also to make new ones! We hope you enjoyed our booths and had the chance to check out our Super Sorter Series along with the many other products we had on display.

We had the privilege of working with the Recycling Association of Minnesota on the centralized recycling program during the show. We provided RAM with four Super Sorter All-In-Ones complete with frames and signage. This was a great opportunity that helped launch this new optional feature into the recycling industry. Centralized recycling programs can now virtually pay for themselves! Contact us for more details.

Congratulations to Kent Foerster from Kansas who won the Home Recycling & Composting Kit through our in-booth contest!

BACK TO SCHOOL RECYCLING

Is your school recycling? Or are the schools in your community recycling? From primary schools right up to world renowned universities, all educational institutes can benefit from a properly laid out recycling program designed to meet their specific goals.

School recycling programs play a vital role for both administrators looking for ways to reduce costs in solid waste disposal and students concerned about environmental issues. Much of the waste generated from educational institutes can easily be recycled. Materials that should be separated and recycled include aluminum cans, glass containers, plastic bottles, newspaper and magazines, flattened cardboard boxes, and paper.

How do you make a school recycling program a success?

  • It is important to first consider that recycling programs for schools are unique in comparison to homes, offices and restaurants. They incorporate a range of collection systems from office waste and cardboard to food waste and glass. There is also the need to include housing and residence life, which factors in residential materials, along with extensive grounds. This creates an opportunity for centralized recycling and organic materials collection. Get students involved through a committee to help spread the word on your recycling program.
  • Assess the waste being collected across your school grounds.
  • Develop recycling programs based on your findings for each area. Concentrate on areas producing the highest amounts of waste.
  • Ensure all containers are located in easy-access areas and are properly marked for quick identification. Containers with specialized openings (i.e. hole for cans, slot for paper) are critical to maintain clean sorts.
  • Educate students and employees on proper recycling procedures. This can be easily accomplished through a special event, posters or memos while distributing containers. Explain the goals of the program and procedures. Be sure to provide recycling information to new students and employees. Use multiple forms of communication to get the word out on recycling (i.e. newsletter, website, handbook, flyers, etc.).
  • Record the volume of recyclables departing the premises through a log system. With this, you will be able to receive accurate compensation for the materials your school has recovered.
  • Once policies have been established, communicate the program to all staff in your Physical Plant and Custodial Maintenance. Demonstrate how to use each container and where to take all collected materials. Have this staff assist in monitoring the program.

We are interested in learning about your school recycling program programs and helping you find the best container solutions to increase participation rates and reach your overall goals. Contact us today and learn more about the various recycling container solutions designed with schools in mind.
