| UNIVERSITY RESIDENCE LIFE RECYCLING Part 1: Preparation and Implementation This mid-east state University’s Residence Life recycling program offers collection services for residence halls, apartments and dining facilities and educational programming to approximately 5,500 students. The program has experienced steady growth over the past eight years and it continually strives to add new services while it is entirely student-run and student-funded. In the fall of 2001, the recycling program piloted its first personal bin project. The University offered a personal recycling bin to each room in one residence hall, and participation was optional. Only 22% of the students living in the pilot hall took advantage of the service. The pilot program was expanded in the spring of 2002 to a second residence hall where only 9% of the students participated. There was no way for the program coordinator to gauge whether or not the personal bins increased tonnage diverted, but she did distribute a survey to all participants to take a qualitative measure of its impact. The results were positive and set in motion the initiatives and effort that has led to the now campus-wide program. Of the 61 original participants, nearly one fifth said that they would not have recycled if they had not had the bin. More than 80% said that they recycled more because of the added convenience, and every participant surveyed believed that the program should be offered campus wide. Efforts to expand the program in 2002-2003 were scuttled by an extremely tight budget, and employee retention complications. In the fall of 2003, with the help of the former program coordinator, the University was able to begin to make serious strides. With the cooperation of two student organizations and two University departments, the program was able to purchase 2,570 Apartment Recycling Bags from Busch Systems. The printable area on the Apartment Recycling Bags was used to display program information. Conditions were set in place to secure the program’s long-term viability. Initial response to the bins has been very positive, and although the final numbers are not in, the fall semester is off to a record start. The Apartment Recycling Bags have taken the program into every living space on campus with the message that this University recycles! “I have found the people at Busch systems to be helpful and friendly during each step of the purchasing process. Their sales team worked hard to ensure that I got the product best suited for my needs and that the graphics were what we wanted. I look forward to doing business with Busch Systems in the future.” |

CAMPUS RECYCLING ON THE WEST COAST Operational equipment can play an important role in promoting recycling to the campus community at this west coast University. The use of unique, functional products attracts attention and help keep recycling in public view. Several Busch Systems products have served well in this capacity. Every fall, new students move onto this west coast University campus and need to be shown that recycling is an expected activity. Busch System's BC-1000 Deskslider has been a consistent tool in promoting recycling to those residents. What began as a pilot project in the 1990’s, has turned into an every day part of operations. Each residence hall room is equipped with a bright green recycling bin alongside a trash can. Residents use the bins to take recycling to centralized collection sites. After years of use, the Desksliders have proven to be long-lasting and functional. Through its demonstrated effectiveness, the Housing Department anticipates using the Deskslider in the residential rooms of a new residence complex set to open in the fall of 2006. During a recycling competition held between the halls of a residence complex, another Busch Systems product was used to promote recycling. Residents of the winning hall were rewarded with Mini Milk Crates. The Mini Milk Crate was used as a prize because of the product's uniqueness and recycled content. This recycled plastic product was a direct example to residents of closing the loop. The Mini Milk Crate was popular among the students because it could be used to hold CD's or organize other items in their dorm rooms. One of the most versatile Busch Systems' bins that the Campus Recycling Program uses is the BC-2000 14 Gallon Bin. These bins are used as inserts for public drop-off locations throughout campus as well as off-campus multi-family residential areas. The bins have been able to withstand several years of use and maintenance. Each unit of a nearby graduate apartment complex is equipped with an Apartment Recycling Bag. The sturdy plastic bag fits easily into each unit, whether it is hanging on a door or stored in a cabinet. This classic style bag is both fun and functional. It also promotes recycling and provides residents with any easy way to do it. "It is always a pleasure working with Busch Systems. Their commitment to supporting the recycling industry is unmistakable through their customer service, product innovation and use of recycled content." |
