TIPS ON SPECIAL EVENTS & OUTDOOR VENUE RECYCLING PROGRAMS

With summertime just around the corner, we are all starting to dream of sunshine and BBQ picnics. From concerts to family reunions, people will soon gather outdoors in parks, beaches and other fun-filled areas. In order to maintain waste diversion rates and reduction goals, it is crucial to run an effective outdoor venue/special event recycling program. These types of programs pose many challenges; therefore you must keep your program simple and easy to participate in. Start off by organizing a system and communicate this to the general public, vendors and other participants.

  • Think of the materials you want to separate and recycle. Consider the standards such as aluminum cans, glass containers, plastic bottles, and paper.
  • Designate a Recycling Coordinator and a team of staff/volunteers that will be sufficient in meeting the needs of your plan.
  • If it applies, check your event permit for any special recycling requirements.
  • Determine the amount and type of waste that is likely to be generated at your event/outdoor venue. This will usually include beverage containers and cardboard.
  • Plan to have numerous containers and position them in clusters within easy-access areas. Containers should be marked for quick identification and offer specialized openings (i.e. hole for cans, slot for paper) in order to maintain clean sorts.
  • Discuss your recycling plan with the company responsible for picking up the waste from your event. They should know what types of waste you will produce. Ask for their advice and check if they have the equipment to take your separated trash and recyclable materials.
  • Use your recycling program as a marketing tool for your event/outdoor venue. Inform the public of your environmentally-friendly approach to waste management.

THE ULTIMATE EVENT CONTAINER

Are you frustrated with the lack of quality containers for collecting recyclables at special events? Studies have shown that bins and barrels don't work because the contents are hidden from the users. See-through containers communicate the message of recycling and virtually eliminate contamination!

Introducing the ClearStream™ Recycler. It's strong wire frame and clear bag provides content visibility. Bold graphics and raised 4-hole lid dramatically increase recycling participation and reduce the chance of contamination.

But what is everyone saying about this innovative event recycling container?

"We collect recyclables 100% free of contamination! We are ecstatic! They're easy to move; people like them and use them! We're now working on a regional loaner system." – Milwaukee 's Farmers Market, WI

"We compared the ClearStream™ to two other types of containers. I saw people walk away from other recycling containers which somewhat looked like trash containers and walk all the way across the field to your container. The ClearStream™ pulled in the bulk of the recycled material that we captured at the event. We filled a 30-yard container." – Community Celebration, NC

"Our set up people want more of the ClearStream™ frames. They setup, tear down and store without the hassle of garbage cans and look so much better than 55 gallon drums." – Township Events, PA

"The ClearStreams™ are a hit at our special events! We are so happy to have finally found containers that are economical, functional and easy to set-up and transport! It takes only seconds to remove the full bags and replace them with clean empty ones." – City Special Events, CA

LOCAL BUSINESSES COVER THE TAB ON THESE MUNICIPAL CURBSIDE BINS

While searching for a funding solution for their blue box recycling program, this Ontario-based township creatively implemented a sponsorship opportunity for local businesses. Advertising space on the curbside bins was sold off to raise money for the cost of purchasing the actual containers. Advertisers had their logo and contact information hot stamped on various sides of each curbside bin. The municipality has been running its curbside program over a decade now. Some of the original bins are still in tact and in circulation to this day.

Township's Curbside Bin

Example of Sponsor's Ad

“It was easy to sell advertising on the blue boxes as each recycling bin lasts approximately 6 to 13 years, giving advertisers a long-term investment,” noted René Jeaurond, Recycling Program Manager. The blue boxes are ideal for marketing to various audiences as they are weekly stationed along the street and in homes in front of residents on a 24/7 basis. “We found the recycling bins to be a very economical promotional tool while considering how long each ad is displayed. A full page ad in our local newspaper will run for close to $1,000 for only one week,” explained a Recycling Committee Member. Many local companies took up this opportunity to get their logo and contact information in front of the public in the most environmentally friendly manner. All of the dollars earned through the bin sponsorship program went toward the purchasing of blue boxes. And for a small municipality this represented substantial savings for all tax payers. “It was a win-win situation for the local economy on all levels,” expressed Mr. Jeaurond.

This is just another way recyclers can find funds creatively.
Potential sponsors for recycling programs can include:

  • Restaurants, Pubs & Cafes
  • Grocery Stores & Markets
  • Retails Stores & Shopping Malls
  • Building Supply Centers
  • Home Repair, Renovation and Decorating Services
  • Real Estate, Law & Insurance Firms
  • Travel Agents & Attractions
  • Golf Courses & Sports Centers
  • Community & Environmental Associations
