Vermi-Composting is an effective and simply way to recycle food scraps, diverting large percentages of waste. It is a method for converting food waste into a fertile, dark, conditioning earthy compost perfect for gardens. You can vermi-compost indoors and outdoors all year long, making this composting option ideal for home composting, including multi-family unit programs. Vermi-Composting programs are easy for all ages to participate in, from children to the elderly. All you need is a Vermi-Composter filled with moistened bedding (i.e. shredded newspaper, cardboard, etc.) and redworms. Just add food waste for a period of time allowing the worms and micro-organisms to turn all contents into rich compost. It is important to make your composting program convenient in order to maintain participation rates and overall effectiveness. Provide Kitchen Compost Carriers for participants to directly collect food scraps and later transport to Vermi-Composters. Be sure to provide participants with an introduction to Vermi-Composting, listing all items they can feed their red worms and other important details. Promote your program through local organizations, committees and media. For more ideas, please contact us via email or at 1-800-565-9931. |

UNIVERSITY RESIDENCE LIFE RECYCLING This mid-east state University’s Residence Life recycling program has been offering collection services for residence halls, apartments and dining facilities and educational programming to approximately 5,500 students. See Part 1 in the Nov/Dec 2004 e-Newsletter. The use of Busch Systems’ Apartment Recycling Bags had impressive quantitative impacts on the University’s diversion totals during the first semester of the new service (Fall 2004). They diverted 57,404 lbs. during the semester, a 68% increase over the spring of 2003 and a 47% increase over the fall of 2003. Comparing last semester’s results to the previous fall is a more accurate indicator of the impact of the Apartment Recycling Bags because of a move-in cardboard drive that generates about 18,000 lbs. of cardboard each year. The amount of cardboard diverted in 2004 was nearly identical to the total from the 2003, so the 47% increase mentioned above represents gains in material collected from the residence halls where the Apartment Recycling Bags were distributed. The most dramatic impact of the Apartment Recycling Bags was witnessed in the collection totals from one specific apartment block. There are 25-four unit buildings that house four students per unit. There are 12 dumpsters located throughout the complex and one recycling trailer. Last year (2003-2004) was the most successful year for this Residence Life program at the apartments and they serviced them by providing recycling bins at each end of each building. This last fall each apartment was provided with an Apartment Recycling Bag and placed two of the recycling bins beside each dumpster. In the first semester of this service the University diverted 3,810 lbs. of recyclable material. This represented a 124% increase over total diversions from the previous year! All areas of campus experienced increases in their lbs/student rates over the previous semester and that campus-wide lbs/student diversion rates reached an all time high last semester. While the University did offer educational outreach programs and helped to support these increases, it is believed they are most likely due to the implementation of a campus-wide Personal Bin Program (Apartment Recycling Bags). The results of this first semester with the Apartment Recycling Bags have been nearly entirely positive. An additional benefit that does not show up in the numbers or on the charts is the habit-forming impact these containers are having on the students. By placing an Apartment Recycling Bag in each room the University is taking their message into the living space of each of the residents. Hopefully this will help to foster more waste conscious citizens for whom recyclable materials simply are not viewed as trash. In summary, this University’s experience with the Apartment Recycling Bags indicates that they have the potential to dramatically increase residence hall diversion rates, especially in apartment-style housing where trash collection receptacles are separate from the living space. |

| GO GREEN INITIATIVE PROGRAM - Who says it's not easy being green?
Certainly not the 170 schools across the nation that have adopted the Go Green Initiative Program! Over the past two and a half years, this step-by-step guide to planning and implementing waste reduction methods on school campuses has become the fastest growing campus conservation plan in the world. With over 125,000 students and their educators participating, the Go Green Initiative is certainly changing the way the next generation views recycling. To celebrate the tremendous success of the GGI, the First Go Green Earth Summit is being held April 10-12 in Pleasanton, CA. Uniting educators, families, conservation experts and community businesses, the Earth Summit is an opportunity for those interested in environmental stewardship to share ideas, solve problems and learn from some of the leaders of the conservation industry. The success of the GGI rests squarely on its premise that waste reduction does not have to be difficult or overwhelming. The three-day Earth Summit will reinforce that idea, teaching participants that small, steady steps build to great heights. Sessions will focus on creating a Go Green plan to fit each school’s needs; the importance of developing partnerships between schools, municipalities, waste haulers and local sponsors; and the value of involving families in conservation efforts. The Earth Summit promises to be an exciting learning opportunity for anyone interested in protecting the health of children and our planet. Sponsorships are still available for those companies interested in sharing their earth-friendly products and ideas. |
