TRENDS WE EXPECT TO SEE MORE OF IN 2005 One of the leading trends with containers we are seeing develop is the increasing demand for semi-automated collection. Out of this need we have created an innovative line of Super Sorter Openings enabling clean, organized sorts for quick, easy and efficient collection of recyclables and waste. These customizable openings come in round holes for bottles and cans, slots for paper, and rectangles for waste. The optional baffles on the openings are a no-fly-zone keeping out wasps and other pests. The openings are incorporated into our Super Sorter Series centralized container line, which have become a unique solution for high traffic area recycling programs. Downtown cores and public areas are dealing with increased pressure to reduce waste and therefore need to be creative in offering the right program for the public. Easy access and quick identification are critical to ensuring participation. Both public and private sectors are being targeted to help in waste reduction efforts nationwide. As the markets are growing, we have been providing more and more complete recycling container solutions for office buildings, companies, schools and institutions. Our Deskslider bins and central Upright containers have helped to greatly reduce waste throughout these types of organizations. A final trend we have watched develop over the last five years has been in apartment recycling, also known as multi-family recycling. We have provided our popular Apartment Recycling Bag to various counties, condos and universities. By enabling residents to directly participate in a recycling program it puts the onus on them to reduce waste. We are anticipating great things for the recycling industry over the course of this new year. We wish you much success in whatever your waste reduction endeavors include and look forward to working with you. - Craig Busch, President of Busch Systems International Inc. |

START WITH RECYCLING IN SCHOOLS As a small, rural county in
“When I placed my first order with Busch Systems, the service was so friendly and helpful in determining what I needed. I had a tight deadline and it was met with plenty of time to prepare the recycling containers for our school distribution program on America Recycles Day. Our schools were so excited to receive the BC-1000’s and have requested additional containers for their growing programs. It was an easy decision to return to Busch Systems who could meet all of our container needs. I’ve received the same great service time and time again. Thank you Busch Systems for your excellent products and outstanding service.” |

FINDING FUNDS WHEN THE FUNDING IS GONE Across the recycling industry more and more Solid Waste Managers are being faced with the challenge of finding the funds to keep their recycling program in motion. As years progress changes are being made to grants and government funding. How will we survive this new face of budgeting? By being creative in our approach to fundraising. Here are some ideas to help you think outside of the bin! Create a buzz around your program. Make people aware of what you are doing and how they are an integral part of the operation. It's important that you have buy-in from all those involved. People will help in spreading the word and building excitement around your efforts. This word-of-mouth buzz will bring attention to your program and therefore make it easier to propose involvement and sponsorship later on. You could accomplish this by making use of local media - send out press releases or get a radio station to host a brief interview with you. You could also distribute flyers/memos, participate in community events, offer an educational seminar on waste management, or create a contest around your program. Get your community involved. Look at the various sections of your community - education, health care, security, commerce, etc. Think of ways to draw an active response from each area as it pertains to your program. For example, schools could hold fundraising competitions, businesses could host a special event, etc. Offer sponsorship opportunities to local businesses and organizations. Advertising can play a vital role in all capacities of recycling programs and these dollars should not go unapplied. Offer companies a chance to sponsor your program and use the imprinting option on containers as a place for their name and logo. Depending on the size of the containers being used, you may be able to have multiple sponsors helping you generate the funds you need. Don't just stop there, keep going in this creative mode. Go to your local recycling associations and utilize their expertise and resources. If you are unsure of who represents your state/province, please call Busch Systems and we would be happy to help. |

| INDUSTRY UPDATES
The Recycling Association of Minnesota partnered with Twin Cities Public Television to produce a 30-minute program on single-stream recycling. The program featured panelists who both favor and oppose single-stream, including the head of Recycle America Alliance, a regional VP from Weyerhaeuser, the CEO of Eureka Recycling (a St. Paul nonprofit recycler), and a representative of a city that uses single-stream. The purpose of the program, which aired twice in November, was to present different viewpoints to the general public rather than just to recyclers. VHS and DVD copies of the program are available for a nominal fee from RAM at ramrecycle@comcast.net or at (651) 641-4560. The EcoIQ.com Solid Waste & Recycling website is for everyone interested in making smart choices about the wastes now generated in our homes, businesses, and communities - choices that are both economically and ecologically intelligent. |
