Welcome to our new-look e-newsletter. Six times each year we have an opportunity to touch-base with our friends in the recycling community and keep you up to date with our experiences and let you know about some of the many projects and programs which we find very exciting. Going forward, we hope to include more case studies, where you can share your success stories with others. We also thought this would be a good forum to introduce some of the many talented people here at Busch Systems whom you may have spoken with for years but never have had the chance to meet in person. In this issue, Ted Boothe will relate a couple of experiences on how our Super Sorter All-in-One is being used to fund recycling programs, and Serena Brooks shares some insights into the future of recycling programs across North America. To keep up with Ted, Serena and the rest of us, drop-down to “Where You Need To Be” for our travel schedule.
Keep an eye out for some exciting new products, programs and fresh ways to tackle old challenges. I hope you enjoy our latest “refinement”, and we invite you to share your feedback at busch@buschsystems.com.

“The Most Affordable Recycling Program, Ever!”
By: Ted Boothe, Senior Account Manager |

One of the most amazing parts of my day is to realize how many different applications our customers have discovered for our products which we never even imagined.
Take for example our Super Sorter family of All-in-One, One-in-One and Two-in-One Recycling & Waste Containers. We set out to make the best line of centralized containers which combined form and function to create the cleanest sort possible. The rest, as they say, is history…
So successful has been it’s entry into the marketplace that we have seen applications in stadiums, schools, food-courts, college campuses and as street furnishings. Recently, the One-in-One has been recognized as the industry standard for the collection of plastic grocery bags.
Due to the creative efforts of some very entrepreneurial Recycling Coordinators, we can now add “The Most Affordable Recycling Program Ever!” to the All-in-One’s list of attributes.
In a high school in Illinois, local businesses which would normally have purchased ads in the school newspaper were instead offered the opportunity to advertise on the billboard-face of the school’s three new All-in-One’s. As a school project, the students regularly compete to design the billboards. The result: “There is a real investment by the students in the participating businesses, and they take genuine pride in our recycling program.” Said the school’s principal. She continues, “The billboard rental not only paid for the containers, but now provides a regular source of funding for other recycling programs.”
In many school and college campuses, companies compete for exclusive beverage and vending rights. Many institutions already stipulate that the vending supplier also contribute towards the recycling programs. By specifying Busch Systems All-in-One receptacles, the supplier can not only contribute towards the capital cost of setting-up the program, but may also contribute a monthly fee to “brand” the containers, providing much needed revenue towards other recycling initiatives.
According to the Outdoor Advertising Association of America, billboards offer the opportunity to communicate tens of thousands of impressions 24 hours a day. By making your Super-Sorter All-in One’s available on campus, around town or in your commercial property. Many agencies will not only lease the panel-area, but will also manage and maintain the billboard for you. You can focus on waste diversion, the Super-Sorter All-in-One will ensure a clean sort, and the billboard will provide the funding to expand your program. It’s a beautiful thing.

Not sure what product is the best solution for your recycling program? Serena’s your go-to-gal. If you want to know what’s on the horizon in the recycling-universe, Serena’s a good person to ask.
Q: Serena, you’ve been here at Busch Systems for almost nine years, what do you enjoy most about your job?
A: So many things. I definitely work with a passionate group of people. Everyone is absolutely determined to help our customers. You really don’t see this level of dedication in many organizations. My customers are invested in the environment, which until recently was an uphill battle. What’s cool is working with towns, or organizations who have never had experience with a recycling program and we get to build it together. Our team is proud to have participated in thousands of new recycling programs over the years.
Q: Where do you see recycling programs going next?
A: There’s a couple of things emerging very quickly. From out of nowhere, plastic grocery bags have become public enemy #1 and recycling coordinators are racing to develop the most effective collection program. At Busch Systems we are already out in front with several pilot programs using our Super Sorter One-in-One. The other areas which are experiencing explosive growth are office recycling programs, and multi-unit residential. Office managers are becoming very astute as to their waste output, and are realizing that recycling practices from home can easily be implemented at work. Busch Systems has been ahead of the curve again with a complete range of containers specifically designed for the needs of today’s office environment, including the best document destruction and security containers on the market. Until recently, multi-unit residential was viewed as too complicated to include in municipal recycling programs, but that’s all changing, too. We have been working closely with municipalities, haulers, management companies and residents associations to create site-specific programs which are convenient, cost-effective and, most importantly, produce a clean-sort. The other major pattern I see is that waste diversion programs are spreading into smaller and smaller communities. I used to hear “Our town is too small for a recycling program,” but these days I’m getting calls from communities with only a few hundred residents. And the neat thing is that it’s the residents who are pushing for recycling.
Q: So, it sounds like a very different landscape than it was almost nine years ago.
A: Customers are more sophisticated, with more specific needs; we service a much wider range of organizations, and Busch Systems has an incredible product assortment to solve all sorts of recycling program challenges…it’s a lot to keep track of, but we know our business, and we have a good time.
