The "Evolution" of Recycling

We are encouraging our staff and students of ENSS to get on board and learn the new system and deal with their waste responsibly.  We have 13 teachers signed up for emptying duties with their classes.  We have conducted a “game show” idea at Grade 9, 10, 11, and 12 assemblies to test students’ knowledge of what waste goes into which bins.  We are in the process of developing a logo to capture the essence of environmental initiatives in place at ENSS…if we all work together, then…

We look forward to measuring our success through waste audits throughout the year, and hopefully will be able to implement more bin stations when funds are generated this year.  Thanks to Busch Systems for excellent service and being part of this exciting improvement at our school!

I wanted to you know how pleased we have been with our new Multi-Recycler recycling containers!  As you know, we here at Discovery Child Care get the children involved in recycling right in the classroom.  These smaller basket type recycling containers with carrying handles have been a BIG hit with the kids.  The Busch Systems containers help make it easy for kids to recycle! They can each carry their own recycling to the sorting bin and it’s not too heavy or awkward for them.  The stacking design is really great too!  The teachers are really happy with how little space they take up in their classrooms!  What an innovative design.  I’d love to know about any new products that would be as equally great in our classrooms!

Discovery Child Care

“One of the things keeping e-waste recycling rates down was the lack of true e-waste recycling bins”, states Serena Brooks, Sales Manager for Busch Systems International, a leading manufacturer of recycling, waste and compost bins. “By offering to customize recycling containers into e-waste bins, we are hoping to increase the recycling rates of electronics such as cell phones”.

The "In-Door Sort" Indoor Recycling Station.

Recycling programs are being implemented in offices and schools at an incredible rate due to increased resources available for both pick up and processing.  Awareness of potential cost benefits and positive environmental impact are being realized and therefore the initial program start-up costs are no longer frightening away the ‘green’ in people.  Indoor recycling container options are plentiful in the eco-friendly marketplace so choosing the best recycle bin to suit your needs requires proper research and education. 

Interchangeable Openings Keep Your Recycling Program Fresh!

A great starting point is giving preference to recycle bins that are made with recycled content, starting your green initiative off right! There are some other important things to consider when purchasing new indoor recycling & waste bins.  Providing an entire recycling & waste station to your participants is imperative.  Should you choose to only have a recycling container available, you are more apt to find trash within – thus contaminating your recyclables.  If you are starting a new program you may want to purchase an indoor sorting station that has interchangeable openings.  Purchasing an indoor recycling container with interchangeable openings gives your program the flexibility to evolve without encountering high recycling container replacement costs.  Openings that are color coded and appropriately shaped will help guide the user into placing their items in the correct streams. 

Great Signage Makes All the Difference in the World!

Another important feature of an effective recycling bin is proper signage.  Participants may require additional information as to which items are accepted within each opening.  Providing this education will not only increase your overall participation rates but also help to reduce contamination, thereby maintaining the value of your recyclables.  Some recycling containers will give you the flexibility to change out your custom signage to keep your message fresh or keep up with any changes to your stream collection.

Durability is another feature not to be overlooked.  While recycle containers will not last forever, there are certainly ones that will last longer than others.  Rotationally molded units will not rust or dent.  Many rotationally molded products are available in stone finishes which are not only aesthetically pleasing but will also hide any dirt or scratches caused from general wear and tear, therefore keeping up the overall pleasant appearance of your recycling program.

Lockable Recycling Station sKeep Your Recyclables Safe!

The other side of the process to consider is the emptying of the units.  Using lockable recycling & waste containers that are keyed alike will save time while keeping your valuable recyclables safe!  No longer will your custodial staff fumble with multiple keys to find that lucky one.  Front door access allows for a quick emptying process while avoiding unnecessary back strain caused by heavy lifting.  To additionally avoid awkward and potentially harmful container emptying, units should include liners with an easy handling capacity.

So before rushing out to purchase your recycling containers please take all of these pointers into consideration to increase your chances of having an effective and overall successful recycling program. It really is easy being green!

I am the Creative Director at Maxi Container. We specialize in Reuse and creating Recycling systems for our Industrial Customers. Recently we moved to a wonderful new facility. I wanted our office and warehouse atmosphere to better reflect the idea of reuse and recycling. Previously we were actually located in Detroit, which does not offer much (if any) options for recycling. We worked in an old antiquated building and we needed a new space desperately.

I met Cassidy LeMoine at the 2011 Michigan Recycling Coalition (MRC) Annual Conference in East Lansing. The products intrigued me and Cassidy was knowledgeable and helped answer my questions. I followed up with a quick email and the next day, I rushed back down to the exhibitor’s hall to let her know we would be very interested in working together!

Multi-Recycler Bins at Maxi Container Office

We are now in our new facility and finally have a Recycling System setup. I specially designed the system with their help and with our company’s individual waste stream in mind. We are currently recycling:

• Paper (cardboard, mixed mail, and shredded)
• Plastic (water bottles, knives, forks etc…)
• Styrofoam (coffee cups, to-go boxes)
• Cans & Bottles (aluminum, glass)

Busch made us custom artwork for the Styrofoam plus they helped me coordinate EVERYTHING!!! I couldn’t have asked for better customer support. We now have multiple stations setup strategically around the office. Also, every office staff member had to trade in their trash can for a Desksiderwith a tiny hanging “Waste Only” basket. This visually sends a message to visitors

and makes sure that the paper gets recycled. For staff that handles confidential documents we provided a PDC (Personal Document Collector) which has a locking lid. Next to the fax machine, we have a Shredinator to collect junk faxes and copies.

The lunchroom / break room is usually the largest collection area for recycling systems. We decided to use the Waste Watchers with the connector kit. All have gray bodies but with different openings and colors for the lids. The signage makes sure that the sort is accurate. I have been very pleased within these first few weeks to see that they are WORKING!!! What else could I ask for?

Additionally we decided to invest in two Super Sorters for outside. I noticed since moving to the new building that trash accumulates around people’s cars. They make it easy to dispose of the soda, juice, and water bottles that build up in your car. I have to say that these two Super Sorters in Greenstone are definitely the most attractive outside recycling bins I’ve seen.

I have one additional statement…. I love all of Busch System’s products. At home I am utilizing the Multi-Recycler and today, (Friday) at the end of day we will distribute one to each employee with a memo about our recycling initiative.

Busch keeps me in the loop with updates on new products, as well as interacts on Social Media with us. Overall I have to say that if more companies were like Busch and Maxi then business would run a lot smoother. My “Hats off to you” and on behalf of all of us here at Maxi I want to say “Thank you!”.

Virginia Military Institute is expanding its recycling program this year, and has Busch Systems to thank for one of our biggest success stories. At VMI, all 1600 cadets are housed in a four-story Barracks. Limited space and stringent aesthetic requirements greatly restricted where we could locate a recycling center; and funding was limited as well. We had to re-use an existing recycling container for bottles and cans, and repurposed a large shipping crate for cardboard collection, so when it came to collecting mixed paper in Barracks, we needed a durable, easy to maintain, easily recognizable container with a small footprint. The Super Sorter was the perfect fit. The slanted top prevents cadets from carelessly leaving debris on the container, and the colored plate with restrictive opening is a strong visual cue that “paper goes here”. The top is easy to manage, and bags are easy to change, which is an added bonus because Barracks recycling is completely cadet-managed. Our next step is to try out a Busch Systems product in cadet rooms, so they can sort paper from other recyclables and carry them easily to the recycling center. The second photo attached shows how little space we had, and how the Smart Sort fits  in.

One good thing leads to another. Because of the new containers in Barracks recycling this year, cadets in the Recycling Club have been engaged and the club is growing. They are taking on more responsibility, such as when they served as “recycling ambassadors” during our home foot ball games. VMI recycled during these games for the first time this fall, and achieved a 36% diversion rate during Homecoming weekend.

The Busch Systems "Smart Sort" in Action!

Busch Systems containers are also being requested in our academic buildings. We are currently trying out two different models: the Smart Sort and the Waste Watcher, and will get feedback from users and custodians on which one is preferred. So far, both versions have been well received because the colors are bright and the labels that came with the units are professional, strong visual cues. These containers are popular and fill up quickly – clearly we need more! (see photo)

I couldn’t have asked for a better customer experience than with Busch Systems. The customer service personnel take the time to learn about the unique needs of our institution and go to great and creative lengths to find solutions that will increase recycling participation. They willingly share examples of how their containers are being used and seem to have come across just about every scenario in the book. Busch Systems is timely with information and with shipping.
