Clemson University has been working on a new pilot program to increase our recycling efforts. We launched the program about nine months ago starting with two of our buildings, Brackett Hall and Sirrine Hall. The program consisted of removing all trash cans in the classroom and purchasing from Busch our community recycling bins for the hallways.

We decided to expand the effort by removing all trash cans in the office and have the recycle bin with the mini trash can attached for all offices. The Busch recycling bins have been such a success that we plan on expanding campus wide.

Recycling is one of our Universities biggest challenges, and getting the appropriate recycle bins in the right areas was the first half of the goal and the second half is getting students, staff and faculty to use them. President Barker’s vision here at Clemson University is to reduce energy consumption 20% by 2020 and recycling is the biggest part of that goal.

All of the University efforts on recycling and the pilot program have proved to be a great success.
